Mission Viejo Lake and Real Estate............ The Beginning
"Build it and they will come" ......................
Lake Mission Viejo Mission Viejo is in Southern California, which is supposed to be a desert but you'd never know it. There wasn't much in Mission Viejo about thirty years ago. It was mostly cattle ranches and wide open country about halfway between Los Angeles and San Diego. Then the developers started building and had to figure out how to get people to move out here. They got together and came up with an idea - they decided to build a gigantic lake. When they first started in 1974 there was nothing there. Now there are 96,336 people living in Mission Viejo, so I guess the developers' plan worked out. Now there is all kinds of things going on. They stocked the lake with fish - trout, bass, sunfish and minnows. They picked those fish because they make up a food chain. You can fish from boats or off the shore and there are two swimming beaches and you can rent kayaks (my favorite), rowboats and other kinds of boats. It looks like the lake has always been there.
The lake is gigantic for a manmade lake - 124 acres. You'd walk 3.8 miles if you followed the shoreline all around it. It holds almost 2 billion gallons of water. There was a big controversy when they first built it because they had to haul in water from other places to fill the lake, but there is an underground aquifer that pumps water into the lake from a well, and even here in sunny California, we do get some rain - an average of almost 17 inches a year.
Here it is when they first filled it.
